COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Protesters scrambled over the gates and seized the office of Sri Lanka’s prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, minutes after he was named the acting president.

At the same time, another group took over the headquarters of Sri Lanka’s national TV broadcaster. Protesters had marched to the prime minister’s office on Wednesday, demanding that he also resign.

Hundreds of police and military forces at his office fired tear gas to stop the growing crowd from breaching the front gates and flooding into the building.

The state broadcaster will air only video and images of the protest until their demands are met, one of the protesters said during a live broadcast, before the TV channel was taken off air.
